A Day Off - Canal Walk

Grand Union Canal: Wendover and Aylesbury. Mon 25 May, 2009

Wendover is officially a town, having gained a royal charter for a weekly market in 1464

Now mainly a commuter "village" on the Chiltern line to London. The Victorian clock tower is an information centre. We didn't go into the pub.

This is the main street

The church is a short walk to the south, mainly along the stream which gave Wendover its name (Celtic, "white waters")

 and which feeds the canal

This would be a horse-butcher in France, but here was I think just a private home

South Street

And the station - from where we caught a train to Aylesbury

Aylesbury is a considerably larger market town

with a rather strange pedestrian/cycle bridge across the railway and a very ugly modern shopping centre

But it also has some rather more attractive parts than this
