Uncle Tom's Cabin is still on
the corner of Portslade Road and Wandsworth Road, though it has been considerably
altered - and now has an apostrophe rather than simply the gap for one, and
is a Sandwich Bar and Coffee Shop, with a few seats on the pavement. It now
serves a wider range of foods; coffee didn't even get a mention in 1981, but
is now served in six variations, with a flat white for £2.00 last year.
Even ten years ago the choice was simply coffee and it was 80p. Clapham has
become gentrified.
Across the road is Wandsworth Road Station, which used to be a rather obscure
stop on the slow twice an hour service from Victoria to London Bridge (with
a once a week early morning service from and to Kensington Olympia.) Now it
gets four trains an hour each way on as a part of the London Overground, running
much more usefully from Clapham Junction to Highbury and Islington though
no longer serving some of the south east London stations on its previous route.
