Police hold back anti-fascists a few yards away from the 'Free Tommy'
protest
A protester argues with a police officer
The protesters were handing out a long list of EDL and Far Rigth convicted
sex offenders
An antifascist with an Antifas cap holds a list of EDL and Far Right
convicted sex offenders
Police push back the anti-fascists towards the pavement.
'Free Tommy' protesters hold banners with the ridiculous claim he
is a political prisoner jailed for journalism
Fight Racism FIght Imperlalism banner 'Smash Capitalism'
a police office tries to get a protester to move off a refuge in the
centre of the road
A group of protesters from Stand Up to Racism arrives to stand beside
the Antifa protesters
Protesters set off some more smoke flares
A group of mounted police arrive.
and another small group of extreme right 'Free Tommy' protesters arrive
who have marched from
Trafalgar Square protected by a police escort
There are probably more police than protesters
The 'Free Tommy' protesters are probably outnumbered by an opposition
at least twice the size - who a
placard calls 'Fascist Lefties'.
The stand-off shouting match continues, with police largely keeping
the two groups apart. I leave to cover
another protest, and return 45 minutes later to find little has changed,
but one anti-fascist who apparently
arrested when he refused to get off the road when ordered by police is being
led to a police van.
