The struggle to bring the cleaners in house took years, with support
from staff and students, who carried out
several occupations, including one when SOAS suspended Unison rep
Sandy Nichol.
Half a dozen students came up onto the steps to speak about the struggle
At the end of the event, people posed on the steps holding posters
about the event and the names of those
deported. The lecture theatre were the cleaners were illegally held
has been renamed the Lucas Lecture Theatre
after the son of one of the cleaners who was 6 months pregnant
when deported. SOAS management still refer to
it by its former name.
