Supporters of Tommy Robinson were gathering in Trafalgar Square. Many
had Union Flags (Union Jacks) with
the message '#Free Tommy' written on them, others held ''#Free Tommy'
placards or wore the t-shirt.
They claim that Tommy Robinson's imprisonment is somehow connected
with 'free speech' when he
was clearly imprisoned for breaking bail conditions and for contempt
of court - and pleaded guilty.
I stood on Whitehall to photograph the people walking down to the
rally there
A groupe came with a Welsh flag
and many were in good sprits, chanting as they walked down
Flowers had been laid for Tommy Robinson at the base of this memorial
to the women of World War II
A man in a Union Jack hat - and a St George's flag
and one wore a Union Jack suit with matching tie and shoes
Mounted police watch the crowd coming down the street
Many held up phones to record what was happening
I saw there was shouting and pushing close to the gates of Downing
St
and joined the crowd to make my way there
Like others I held up my hand to take photographs over the heads of
the crowd,
and found my hand being grabbed as two ment shouted at me and tried
to grab my cameras. From their shouts
it was clear that they recognised me from earlier extreme right protests
I had photographed. I managed to pull
away from them and move away through the crowd but
they followed and continued their attack until I got close
to the police at Downing St. Fortunately no others in the crowd joined
in and I think some tried to get them to
stop their attack.
where there were also protesters trying to stop anyone making trouble.
A man lifts his hands to protect his head as a police officer threatens
him with her baton
Others persuade the angry protesters to move away from the barriers
A man tells the large crowd filling Whitehall that the rally will start
shortly. Lots more police were arriving, and there
were clearly some fights with police in the crowd. I was feeling very confused
and a little shaken by the attack on me
though very relieved I had managed to shake them off and decided to go and
photograph the counter protest instead.
