Woolwich wander

Falconwood to North Woolwich, London. Mon 28 May 2018

People wait to board the Woolwich Ferry Ernest Bevin

Bevin, minister of Labour during WW2 was a trade unionist and Labour MP for Wandsworth Central and, in his final

year until his death in 1950, for Woolwich East.

We walk along the gangway to get on board

and down the steps on the boat

The Ernest Bevin was built in 1963 and is to be retired later this year along with its two sister ships

New buildings on the Woolwich Arsenal site

The ferry is a useful river crossing, but also somewhere people go to enjoy. I brought my two boys here when

they were small - and we walked back under the river in the foot tunnel after a visit to the railway museum (now closed)

 We approach the north pier

 The Thames Barrier is upstream

 the roadway is lowered slowly

and cars and lorries get ready to leave

 and we walk off too

Some of London's rubbish goes past

Canary Wharf from the north pier

By the time we reach the bank the Ernest Bevin is across the river

We walk a short distance along the riverside path

to where the old ferry used to run

opposite North Woolwich station, now closed. For some time it was a railway museum.

and we walk up Pier Road

 across Albert Rd

and on the short distance to King George V DLR station

Student Housing for East London University across the docks from the station footbridge. In the middle is the
runway of London CIty Airport. I didn't have time to wait for a plane to take off before the train came.
