The roof of the Great Hall. The building dates from the end of the 13th century when it was built for Laurence of Ludlow  The kitchen  The Great Hall.  Stairs lead up from the Great Hall into rooms in the North Tower    The windows looking out from the Great Hall on the outside of the manor were never glazed, but had shutters  though these don't appear to have ever been a tight fit. There was no chimney for the fire -on the hexagon in the centre of the picture, so plenty of ventilation was needed to allow wood smoke to escape  The 17th century gatehouse from the first floor of the manor house |

 The large hall was the main living space, with a fire in the centre of the floor.
