Waltham Forest Defeats the EDL

Walthamstow, London. Sat 1 Sep 2012

An anti-fascist banner was quickly surrounded by police.

Police re-routed the march away from the main road. The EDL threw some smoke bombs and tried to break
through stewards and police lines to attack the anti-fascists who had come to meet them.

Finally the police ushered the EDL down a side road and through the back streets towards the town hall

as they crossed the Chingford Rd they gestured towards Walthamstow residents who had come out to oppose them

A young boy watches the EDL march from a first floor window

Kevin Carroll and a few other EDL leading members had set up a public address system outside the town hall

Facing them were hundreds of people from Waltham Forest with the message 'EDL not welcome'

'Tommy Robinson' takes a brick thrown at the EDL to the police

I decided at this point that as I had no head protection it was too dangerous to stay in the area.
It looked as if the situation had reached a stalemate, with the people of Walthamstow having
managed to prevent the rally and the EDL held by police in a side road. I was tired and so left
it to my many colleagues present to cover further events and went home.
