Council AttemptsTo Rename Staines

Staines, Middlesex. Sun 20 May 2012

Two from our twin town of Melun, just south of Paris at the naming ceremony

Dame Sarah Goad, Lord Lieutenant of Surrey, sat beside the Mayor

Gill Vince of the Mayor's Office at Spelthorne Council talks to a paralympic hopeful

Quite a crowd had gathered for the day in the riverside gardens

An Olympic rower who so far as I could ascertain had no connection at all with Spelthorne but had won 2 gold medals

Lord-Lieutenant of Surrey, Dame Sarah Goad speaking

Staines resident Bill Nankeville ran in both 1948 and 1952 Olympics though it wasn't clear what this had to do with changing the name of Staines

One of this guy's two Olympic gold medals - you could be photographed with him for one of the charities present

The British Airways Brass Band. For some reason we didn't get the Staines Brass Band, one of the
top bands in the country - perhaps they were competing elsewhere. Their second band,
the Staines Lammas Band was listed on the programme but I didn't see them perform.
