Defend Harrow Mosque

Harrow, London. Sunday 13 Dec 2009

At this point, around 15 minutes after their rally had been expected to start there were around nine protesters, mainly from the EDL

A few waved an England flag and shouted at the several hundred supporters of the mosque

  While others tried to hide

One man held up a crudely drawn rerpresentation of a Muslim woman in a burkha - a "No burkhas" road sign

And another pretended not to be able to hear the loud chanting from the other side of the barrier

This woman, who told us she was Jewish, had been campaigning against female genital mutilation opposite the mosque earlier. A social practice in some countries that predates Islam it has in recent years been prohibited by many Islamic authorities as contrary to Islam, an attack on women, and a practice that should be criminalized. The material she handed me and others about it contained no hint of the opposition to the practice by the vast majority of Muslims
